Not at all a dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) but a member of the ancient Chicory family (Chichorium intybus), these pleasantly bitter leaves are a favorite of my tortoises. I grow them year round in pots and they can be harvested frequently and recover fast. The plants stand erect, up to 12” tall and have thick rosettes of leaves resembling those of common dandelions. Here in South Carolina they grow year round. They die back in the winter but sprout back up in the spring. They can also be grown indoors in pots.
